Many young people who aspire for a career in the naval service look into navy boot camps in order to prepare them for the rigors of naval education and training. If you think that the training in boot camp will be easy, you're in for a surprise. Here are the basic Navy water qualifications:

- Cadet must be able to enter the water (feet first) at a minimum depth of five feet deep.
- After entering the water, at five feet deep, the cadet must remain afloat for five minutes.
- Cadet must also be able to swim using different kinds of swimming strokes for a minimum of 50 yards.

These qualifications tests your skills when in the water, which is an important aspect of training for Naval service.

The Navy Boot Camp training lasts for two months and is usually conducted at Great Lakes, IL. It's tough work and it's certainly no relaxing summer vacation for cadets, however the rewards that you reap can give considerable advantage when you need it for applying in the service. The Great Lakes campus is a huge training ground manned by navy personnel. The training program in navy boot camps are divided as follows:

Week 1 - During the first week, cadets are evaluated for admission, issued their uniform and given the first orientation. They are checked up by physicians to see if they can hold up to the training, they are given their haircut in order to comply with Navy regulation hairstyle. Cadets will know what is expected of them, they will be taught how to properly make their bunk beds, where their footlockers can be located, and other basic things. There will be military drills and a lot of Navy classes to get them acquainted with the field.

Week 2 - This is usually when cadets are acquainted with typical emergency situations that they may face while on a Navy vessel. They are taught how to respond to these situations and are expected to work in teams and develop a strong sense of camaraderie. During this time, cadets' bond with fellow cadet will become stronger and they will learn to work as a team to achieve their goals.

Week 3 - Physical drills will be continuous throughout the training but this is the time when the drills will become tougher and more physically demanding. There will be land and ship drills as well. Cadets will be taught the proper etiquette, rules, and code of conduct expected of them onboard a real Naval ship.

Week 4 - This marks the end of the first month of training and is usually when tests (practical and theoretical) may be conducted to test the knowledge of cadets and what they've learned so far.

Week 5 - This is usually when cadets can focus on whether they want a Naval career in the future. Recruiters will come and talk to them and give them some guidance. Essentially, just help them make the decision of whether to continue with the Naval career or pursue a different kind of career.

Week 6 - During this week, students may expect more drills and an addition of practical tests. For example, there may be mock tests like what would cadets do if the ship is on fire and how to respond to different kinds of emergencies that could happen on board the ship. There will be more written tests too, as the week wears on and training becomes more challenging.

Week 7 - Cadets may finally get a taste of their first simulated battle where cadets are divided by teams and are engaged in different kinds of battle scenarios. Here, cadets can really put the theories they learned into practice.

Week 8 - This is graduation week where family and friends are invited to share in the pride of graduating Navy boot camp training.

After this, teens can decide whether this is something they really want to do for the long term or not. If they do decide to pursue Naval training, it gives them the edge because they're already familiar and well-versed with how real Naval training can go. If not, they'll go home with valuable life lessons such as discipline, a drive for excellence, teamwork, and many others.
